7 Genius Spring Decor Ideas From Your Humble Dollar Store

Interested in adding some spring decor to your home without spending tons of money? All you really need is to head to your local dollar store, where bargains await that can be refashioned in all kinds of ways.

As proof, we asked some bloggers to share their favorite spring decor crafts inspired and supplied by dollar stores. Try a few of these ideas to brighten up your space, or usher in some Easter cheer with the kids. The best part: They barely cost a thing!

1. Rope basket

Take inspiration from Jen Jones of I Heart Organizing to turn a rather mundane dollar store laundry basket into a striped rope basket. To execute this idea, she simply armed herself with a glue gun, rope (she chose two different colors), and her newly purchased plastic laundry basket.

Starting from the bottom up, she carefully glued and pressed the rope, gently weaving it around the basket. At the top, she used extra rope to finish it with a flourish. Voila! An instant pop of color and chic way to store blankets and laundry, or even corral clutter.

2. Vertical succulents garden

Don’t have the time (or patience) to deal with real greenery in your home? Fake succulents can be found at some dollar stores, and Katie Femia from Homespun Hydrangea used them to create a cute, vertical garden.

She simply placed a piece of faux moss brick (found in most crafts stores) inside a thrift store frame, then hot-glued the dollar store succulents on top, pressing them into the moss. You can even turn this into a wall hanging by adding a hook to the back.

3. Painted chargers

For a stylish (and inexpensive) way to update your Easter table, try layering a painted dollar store charger—a large, flat dish that sits under the meal plate—at each place setting.

Jeanie Emmert from Create & Babble transformed plastic chargers with several layers of spray paint primer and then a few coats of colored spray paint to complete the look.

She chose pastel colors that would coordinate with her dishware, but you can certainly execute this look with any shades you please. (We love the nod to springtime with her chosen shades of celery and robin’s egg blue.)

One caveat: The chargers aren’t food-safe, so make sure to layer them under the plate you plan on serving food on.

4. Salt and pepper bud vases

To create these adorable bud vases, Stefanie Gatti from Paint-A-Sign (formerly Frumpy Bumpkin) used her ingenuity to transform a set of 50-cent salt and pepper shakers. These shabby chic vases require only a few easy steps.

First, remove the lid from each shaker and apply a layer of chalkboard paint. After sufficient drying time, paint the shakers in the color of your choice (Stefanie chose Sea Glass for a cheerful spring look). Once your colored coat has dried, use sandpaper to create a worn-in look. You can also tie a ribbon and glue a faux flower bud to re-create the exact look shown here.

5. DIY topiary trees

Love the look of tall topiary trees but hate the prices? Shannon from Home Made Lovely created a faux version using items from the dollar store that look just as good as the real thing.

To create them, cut a piece of foam to fit into your terra-cotta pot, and then hot-glue it into place. After inserting the skewer and placing the greenery ball atop, paint the skewer green and then gently weave several thin rolls of modeling clay around it to mimic a vine. Lastly, paint the clay and “age” the pots by painting them sparingly with the same color as the skewer. Hot-glue the moss to the piece of foam, and enjoy!

6. DIY dollar store floor pillow

When we think of home furnishings, the dollar store isn’t usually the first place that comes to mind. However, Sam Nason and Chanda Brown from Zest It Up have plundered dollar stores to create a perfectly stylish boho floor pillow.

Start by whip stitching the rugs to a 6-inch burlap strip. After you’ve sewn three sides together, you can stuff it with your choice of batting or a regular pillow. Finish by stitching the pillow closed, and place it on the floor for an inviting look.

7. Easter eggs

Angie Holden from the Country Chic Cottage has mastered the art of creating beautiful crafts out of dollar store items—like, say, wrapping plastic eggs with twine to create Easter decor on the cheap. Begin by gluing the twine in a circle, and continue to wrap the egg until it’s completely covered. She chose to wrap her eggs in both natural and white twine, but choose whatever colors strike your fancy!
